Hello everyone,
Tairaku is on his way to Sri Lanka so he asked if I would post these photos from the Isamu Noguchi Garden in Costa Mesa, California.
Happy New Year to all!

Great pics, Ken. How far is that place from San Fran? I don't know the geography down there very well, just SoCal.
Does Brian always chew on his flutes, though?
And you say Brian's going to Sri Lanka? Wow.

I'm sure you are joking, Eddie, but what Brian is actually doing is employing a very effective method of playing a meri note; one can get the same effect by TURNING the head, at the same time as tipping it downward...

I've never seen that, but I'll give it a try. I figured it was something to do with getting an interesting sound.

Thanks Ken for posting the pictures, and thanks to Brian for showing us. It looks like a neat place to play-especially being alone there.
That's a big stick Tairaku's carrying-maybe not as big as the Seaweed shakuhachi, but still substantial! Inline holes too, I see. I sure would like to try one of the big ones sometime-the diameter of it is also no small twig either!
My 2.4 in comparison looks like a toothpick! But, the sound on mine is delightful, so I can't complain. I just like those bass sounds.
Anyway, thanks for sharing!

It's in Southern California, a little south of Long Beach.

Barry,
It's interesting how different shakuhachi can be. The thinner bore flutes have more of a focused, rich, confident and powerful tone. The wider bore flutes have an airy, glowing, ephemeral tone - Both nice in their own way.
