New player... new recording

Hi everyone

I received my first Shakuhachi a week and a half ago, a Perry Yung 2.4 Earth model. So far I have to say I love it!

I have put together a recording of myself playing with nature sounds in the background recorded at my parents forest. By no means do I consider myself a good player yet but wanted to have some experienced players listen and hopefully give some feedback. I have not learned any pieces yet and just play from within

follow the link below and click play on the player. I suggest using headphones to hear some of the subtleties

Thank you!

Never stop playing from within, even if you decide to study traditional music.

Find your voice and express yourself, that's the point.

Re: New player... new recording

Bravo,

that was nice.  Very good stuff.

I am sure that all your other flute experience is making a huge impact on your progress with the shakuhachi (even if you are not sure how).  Your NAF flutes look very beautiful by the way.

I am new too.  Have been playing since January.  For the last couple of months I have also been playing on a Perry 2.4 Earth Model that my new shakuhachi friend Shaman141 sold to me.  It has been great.  I also have a Yuu.  I am just now able to move into the second octave (by choice), and I must say, I find the bamboo 2.4 lets me get there in a "more" natural, almost effortless way, whearas the Yuu requires a little bit of struggling.

This week I am getting my 2.7 Hocchiku from Perry.  Once I am gainfully emplyed I would like to also get one of those chinese jinashi long flutes from Ken, maybe a 2.9 or a 3.  I am not sure.  One step at a time.

Thanks for the kind words and support!

The Shakuhachi has been a breath of fresh air for me, something for the inner soul. I love the deep tones of the large shakuhachi and think I will be getting something bigger than the 2.4 soon!

I agree -- nice recording. It felt as if moving between the chill of mystery/curiosity and warmth of discovery/understanding.
