Carl Abbott - 7 "Rooms" of a shakuhachi??

Hi again.....

I've been reading about these 7 "rooms" of a shakuhachi...does anybody have any info on these?  How do they compare/differ from the "pressure points" way of tuning?  I've heard that they're an "older" way of tuning the bore.
Has it been replaced with the "new and improved" way of pressure points?

I know i'm asking a lot of questions but i really appreciate everyone's help.  Thanks to everybody.

It's better to keep your mouth closed and let people "think" that you're stupid, than to open it, and remove all doubt.

Re: Carl Abbott - 7 "Rooms" of a shakuhachi??

Hi Jacques,
Carl's approach is one of many ways to think about tuning a jiari shakuhachi. It certainly would not hurt to try to understand and apply his theories.  Carl suggest to "check" a room if a corresponding note is problematic. You have to ask, "What does "check" mean?" and then keep checking until you think you've exhausted that room.

Eventually, one builds experience with everything that's tried and that become part of the maker's toolbox and, IMHO, the most important tool. For me, being aware of the pressure points give me a perspective on the entire flute.

Many apprentice makers in Japanese shakuhachi workshops make only by gauges and rely on the journeyman shop master to test the flutes for playability. Solo makers usually craft according to their level of skill in playing traditional techniques and rely on master players who commission flutes for feedback on each flute. I let the music guide me when making decisions. The more specif you are, the less choices you have.

Enjoy the process, Perry
