shakuhachi history books?!

Hello all!
I want to buy a book on the history of the shakuhachi. and i want the most awesome one there is.
i have a couple of smaller books with a little bit on the history. most of the big books are pretty expensive, so i can only afford one! Which one do you all think would be the best book on history, if you could only have one?!

thank you,
david

Re: shakuhachi history books?!

It depends what school you are most interested in. Tone Takehashi's thesis has an excellent analysis of the development of shakuhachi and the final section is focussed on the Tozan-ryu. Riley Lee's thesis is very comprehensive with some emphasis on the chikuho school. Chris Yohmei Blasdel's 'The shakuhachi: Manual for learning' contains an excellent and concise history section that mentions all the main schools. There is a reading list on the articles pages of my website with details of these and various articles. The article by James Sanford, Shakuhachi zen: the Fukeshu and komuso is excellent. All the above are available from shakuhachi.com.

Re: shakuhachi history books?!

Hi Phil,

If your interest is more in the line of treading about he HONKYOKU repertoire, let me (not so humbly) recommend my own book "Sui-Zen":Blowing Meditation.
It is sold in a plastic Box-Set with 5 CDs that include the entire Jin Nyodo style Honkyoku repertoire. The price is $90-, plus $5- for shipping domestically and $15- Internationally. You can order it through my website with paypal <http://www.nyogetsu.com>
Just choose one of the prompts that allow you to enter in your own amoun tof money and I'll get it out to you.

Since I still don't really have this item listed in my items for sale area, I guess a little self-aggrandizement , every once in a while, is OK!!

Don't miss out on Riley Lee's Phd. thesis as well.
You can download it from Monty's sight.
