New member with a Native American Flute background

Hi folks,

This site is a real find. I've been Playing Native American Flutes for about  8 months and crafting them for about three. I've started taking shakuhachi lessons a week ago. A lot more complicated than the NAF but also more satisfying--when I finally get in tune. The list of topics has ready helped answer many of my questions. Hope to contribute when my questions are beyond "why is it so hard to keep on tone?"

Take care,

Stan

Hi Stan, Welcome to the Forum. Glad to have you.

"why is it so hard to keep on tone?"

The main reason is you haven't developed the lips muscles yet to hold the embouchure. It's very much like violinists having to develope the bow and vibrato technique. It'll come with many hours of practice.

Just remember to enjoy the deep breathing smile

Welcome, Stan - I, too, have only recently discovered this treasure trove. And you have a greeting from the grand master of bamboo, Perry Yung! A great honor!
All the best to you.... and keep practicing!
