Wild Bamboo in Northern California

Hi folks,

Does anyone know of any areas within 50 miles of San Francisco were I can locate a stand of bamboo suitable for making shakuhachi? Further if necessary.

Hi Stan,

I've been to a few groves in and around Sonoma but I can't remember the exact locations. The bamboo was decent. You might want to check with Hakone Gardens in Saratoga and Bamboo Giant in Aptos. It takes some diplomacy but sometimes the nurseries will let you harvest yourself. They also sell non-root culms.

Good luck,

Ken
