Recording of Araki Chikuo jinashi shakuhachi

I have been requested by a member of the forum to record the sound of Araki Chikuo's shakuhachi. As a few people seem interested, I shall put the link here. Scroll down and you should find it:

http://justinshakuhachi.googlepages.com/kinkoryu

You may notice that the pitch is a little low. That's due to the temperature of my room. It's a very cold day today and I played it with my wooly hat on! Makes the fingers quite slow too, but hopefully it gives some idea at least. The piece is Tsuki no Kyoku, which is a honkyoku Chikuo composed. Due to file size limitations on my website I recorded only the first part of the piece and had to use mp3 compression. (Let me know if it doesn't work on your browser).

Very nice, Justin. Thanks.

Where did you get that nifty little mp3 player with the scrolling header? smile

Re: Recording of Araki Chikuo jinashi shakuhachi

Yesterday, I noticed that my shakuachi sounded different until I played it for about ten minutes. Excuse me I am a beginner so this is a new experience for me. It is a beautiful flute indeed.

Hi Purehappiness
Partly it's a case of warming up in the sense of getting your embouchure and all that ready, into the right habit of making a good sound. And partly it can be about warming up the instrument itself. Usually they sound better when warmed up. The main problem I have personally with cold, is having cold fingers. They become very slow. You can hear on the recording for example my repeating atari on the 5th hole with my thumb is poor. Fast atari is very difficult in clod weather, so remember to warm up your instrument but also your fingers.

If you are a beginner than your shakuhachi will sound different at least every 10 minutes. Enjoy it.  Things have to get more complicated before they become more clear!

Hmm,  my shakuhachi still sounds different every 10 minutes after 27 years.  Is this what you mean by things getting clearer?

By the way, now that this is a barbeque joint can I get an order of ribs? wink

Larry, it is only clear that you have accepted this 10 minute interval with grace. BTW, do we play Tamuke before eating here?

Dude!  this is a Japanese BBQ.  Jostle your way in, pick your morsel and snap it up like a heron fishing in the shallows.  Give it a good dunk in your tare of choice and don't forget to let the word 'oishii' sneak out a few times at appropriate places just to make sure that consensus is satisfied. A bit of eye rolling doesn't hurt either.  Ittadakimasu.
