Smaller Shakuhachi

Just for the giggles, I tried to make a mini shakuhachi from the top piece of the culm I used for a longer shakuhachi, and used the formula for larger flutes. The tuning was all wrong. I imagine the bore was too wide...

Is there a good formula for making smaller flutes?

Christopher

Christopher,

Have a look at this (not a formula, but an itty bitty shakuhachi):

While you're at it, look over the rest of his site; it's a delight:

[Note: there are some mp3s of Kinya playing a couple of the flutes shown here. Click on the pics to see.]

Masa played that flute for me once. I can't really tell you how it sounded because I was laughing so hard while he played.

Christopher,

The shorter the flute, the less forgiving the aspect ratio is. The AR window is tighter. In fact, there is less room for error with everything. It's a challenge! A thin bore can increase your odds of a better tuned very short flute. Best of luck with your sanity!!

I actually had the great pleasure of playing it and it was functional. I was able to do a decent version of Kumoijishi on it. Amazing. Masa was an interesting character.
