Hi all,
I have a broken Xiao at home...it broke a long time ago. A few days ago I added my first bindings to this flute and it plays very well again. I used Perry´s booklet for the bindings and after some trys it worked quite well the only issue is that the bindings are a liitle bit loose at the first lines. Some tips how to fix that? If I try to get them tighter at the beginning the whole binding moves.
Thanks and all the best!

Get a piece of wood dowel (or scrap bamboo) about the same size as your flute, and practice. You'll get it.
Also, here's some more info which may be helpful:

And, read everything on this thread, some tips from Perry and others:

Still, practice is the ticket.

I ordered some Nylon from a shop near me I just tried the first bindings with normal cord. I will keep practice before I bind my Shakuhachi.

I am using a black waxed binding thread that is used to bind rope.
I find it grips better than nylon.

I've never used waxed binding (though I've seen it used often enough). How does the price compare to nylon? (and if it's much cheaper, where can I get a hold of some?)
The spool I have was purchased by a friend and gifted to me, I don't know it's price but would not think it would be too different to nylon.
I would enquire at any quality hardware outlet, canvas or tent repair craftsman, perhaps any outlet that stocks threads.

problem with waxed bindings is that it doesn't have any flexibility, ive seen bansuri with waxed binding that was so loose that u could just slip it off the flute, i recently got a nylon thread from a store that sells only threads, but i got a huge crack in one of my columns and my bindings didn't manage to keep it closed well enough, guess il have to tighten and glue them..and maybe also the crack...so i suggest gluing your bindings..or lacquering them...

Hi Itamar
I use Tuff cord which was recommended by Perry. Works great and you can find it on the internet.I'll also be bringing some back to Tel Aviv in a couple of months. Let me know if you want some.

What gauge of tuff cord?

Go to a fishing supply store and get some 20-40 pound fly fishing leader.
Clamp the "loose" end to a solid object and start the binding.
Carefully grip the flute like bicycle handlebars and roll on the binding.
Keep some tension on the binding throughout the process.
Practice on a dowel first until you can get nice neat bindings.

what about the loop you need to get underneath? it dosnt let you to tie the loose end to anything...
