Sad news

I have been a member of this forum for long time.
But this is the first post of mine.
I'm very sorry I have to inform you this very sad news.

Yokoyama Katsuya sensei passed away at 14:40pm 21st April (Japanese time).
There were some cancers in his body.
Original one was "carcinoma of the colon and rectum".

The funeral will be done on 26th. (Tsuya ceremony will be on 25th)
I don't have enough informations about the cremonies so far.

Regards,
Kaoru

Re: Sad news

I regretfully am informing the forum that Yokoyama Katsuya sensei has passed away. He had been struggling for awhile but had definitely been strong until the end, when the cancer had finally taken over. He passed away at 2:40pm, April 21st.  Words cannot express the imprint that he has left on our shakuhachi world.

Re: Sad news

Very sad news indeed. Thanks for posting, Kakizakai Sensei and Josh. Yokoyama Sensei was a great musician and an inspiration to all of us. Those who were able to hear him play (or study with him) will never forget his huge sound and unique style. Luckily he left many recordings and videos for future generations of shakuhachi players and listeners to enjoy. There are few who have done as much to popularize the shakuhachi and bring it into the modern world.

For many of us, we simply wouldn't be playing today if not for the inspiration his playing provided. His absence will be deeply felt.

Re: Sad news

Very sad indeed. Yokoyama sensei is the reason I play shakuhachi today. His (shakuhachi) voice was the first I had ever heard (on a recording of the Toru Takamitsu piece "November Steps") and it left an enormous impression on me (this was in 1969 or 1970).

The funeral will be held at Hosen-ji Temple, 2-33-3 Chuo, Nakano-ku, Tokyo, from 10:30am of Monday, April 26th."

Re: Sad news

This is quite a sad day for many people. Yokoyama sensei was such a unique personality, open and with so much energy. It was also because of his playing that I too got into shakuhachi. I will remember him for all the truly good things he did for the world of shakuhachi and be forever be grateful to him.

Re: Sad news

Very well put, Daniel. As sad as it is to have him gone his passion and enthusiasm are indelible. We also owe him much for the influence of his "ryuha nashi" inclusive universalism. His playing embodied an enormous spirit, a deep emotionalism and fantastic musicianship. Due to a large extent to his efforts and with his career as a model the shakuhachi now enjoys a permanent place on the world stage. I'll be forever grateful for his guidance and truly inspirational life.
