Hello all. I just got back from spending a fun week with Peter Ross down in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. He and his wife Marisa are great people. Every Wednesday Peter plays at an Asian noodle bar in town. I got to hear him for an hour or so where he played his Arabian shakuhachi as well as did various interpretations of some old folk songs. He has a great sound. I got to take several lessons as well during the week based on musicality, improvisation and tone color.
As many of you know, Peter made wooden shakuhachi back in the 70's. He intended do do so again recently, but found that he is now allergic to many of the materials that are used in the construction process. With this in mind, he has decided to focus more on playing shakuhachi and Jazz piano. Peter has also decided to pass down his tooling and knowledge to me. Much of the week was spent on his process and reviewing his notes and taking measurements etc.... Peter's tooling is based on one of Masayuki Koga's favorite 1.8s. I am very honored to carry on the tradition. Thank you Peter!

Let me know when you start production! I'd like one...or four.

That sounds interesting. I assume it's a shakuhachi with a different tuning. But what scale, and how many holes?

It was a 6 hole shakuhachi. I still have to study the scale.

I also have one of Peter's 6 hole Arabian tuning flutes. It's pretty cool. I believe it is made of oak, turned, and hollowed with a tapered reamer. This particular flute is in E and the scale is: E, F#, G, Bb, B, C#, D.

Yes, Peter does have an amazing sound. He had/has a constantly morphing and very fluid embouchure. He asked Yokoyama Katsuya to try one of his Arabian tuned flutes and Yokoyama's immediate response was one of delighted surprise. Good luck with it Colyn.
