Riley Lee in Hospital

I received this email a few hours ago, and am posting it here so that we can all pray for Riley's complete recovery. My thoughts are especially deep and strong for his wonderful wife and family.

Subject: FW: Riley in Royal Brisbane Hospital

    Hi Ronnie,

    Trust you are well.

You might already know this as bad news often travells very fast, but I am forwarding you Patrica Lee's email for your info.
Also -- this is all back to front ; Patrica's latest update is first (in quotations, and then below is the whole story) :

    --- Ian C (Western Australia)

"I have just had a phone call from Graham, the taikoz artistic
director on this tour, who has been back and forth to the hospital
checking on Riley. He says Riley's shakuhachi seem to have survived
the impact unscathed but he didn't know if Riley had checked his
computer...these were all in his back pack when the accident happened.

At this stage I only have the following info from Riley via text msg.
I assume this is info he has received as a result of X-rays.
His left arm is broken below the shoulder. Probably it will need a
plate. His left knee is really messed up and will probably need
reconstruction. There is another break near the ankle which will heal
itself. It seems the operations will not happen until Monday. He is
still waiting for an MRI. And finally his latest text msg says he has
a burn on his left calf that will need a skin graft."

Riley and Patricia-
So sorry to hear this. We wish you a successful (and, hopefully, straightforward) encounter with the surgeon and a quick recovery. Our love and prayers are with you both,

If the spirit you have shown on your posts here is any indicator, you won't let this keep you down for long.

Fast healing Riley!

Re: Riley Lee in Hospital

I dropped in on Riley on Saturday, and he was in good spirits given the situation. Quite a bit of bed-rest ahead though once the work on him is done. Fingers are all okay, as are the lips and lungs :-)

Re: Riley Lee in Hospital

Just got an update from Patricia:

Riley Update THU NOV 04

Thank you for your concern and well wishes.

Riley was prepped and ready for operation/s this morning.
However he has since informed me he didn't make the list today. This could continue for several days. If life threatening emergencies come in he gets 'bumped - gently!!' from the list.

He has had x-rays and an MRI and as far as I know he has to have a plate in his upper arm to fix that break. His knee is the most serious problem with tendons on both sides severed also his ham string. The knee will probably be stabilised when the operations start but knee reconstruction is not planned for at least two months.

Both the burns specialist and the orthopaedic surgeon will have to be present at the knee op because the burn on the calf is immediately behind the knee. Riley says they will have to take skin from his thigh for the graft (size of a book). Once the skin graft is done and barring no infection he will be in hospital at least 2 weeks.

He has been visited by a lawyer and the compensation claims are now in the system.

Re: Riley Lee in Hospital

hi shakuhachists,

lower speed limits

I was really pleased to hear today that the Australian Capital Territory government have decided to conduct a trial of 40 kilometre per hour speed limits in the Canberra town centres of Gungahlin and Woden; to improve the safety of road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010 … ction=news

It was heartening to hear.

Re: Riley Lee in Hospital

Fiona, I hope it works. The speed limit in my town is a sensible 48 kph (30 mph) and I don't believe anyone has been seriously injured or killed in days. The statistics would doubtless be better if a significant number of drivers paid the signs any mind. Most seem to interpret the speed limit to mean the minimum speed allowable by law.

Re: Riley Lee in Hospital

Right off the top, from living in one of the worst driving states in the USA, Kal-i-forn-aye-yay:
Australia would be good to iron-clad their Drink Driving laws (i.e. no tolerance; high fines and time in the cooler); increase enforcement;
Improve manditory driver education; Make people take REAL driving exams (written and behind the wheel), Reduce speed limits
and sextuple fines and punishment for anyone involved in an accident injuring a shakuhachi teacher.

Re: Riley Lee in Hospital

I was very sorry to hear about the accident. I have never met Riley, but have heard
many nice things said about him over the years. I wish him and his family the best, and
hope the recovery goes as well as can be expected.

As for changing laws to improve safety, I'd start with no cell phone use while driving,
or at LEAST no "texting".

A friend of mine was rear ended by another car. The driver of the other car got out
and apologized. His apology was "Sorry, I looked up and it was too late".
True story. Fortunately no serious injury in that case.
