It is about 8 inches tall and it is made from bass wood, clay, and oil & acryllic paint.
Basically I am not a very skilled carver but I like working with wood. So I generally carve in wood to the best of my ability, and then use a self-hardening clay to go back and fill in all of my carving mistakes. And when I am done I use oil paints to create an interesting texture. And in this instance I put on a thin arcyllic paint wash in various blue tones to make the coloring dynamic or 'antique' looking.
When I gave it to Tanaguchi he pretty much shrugged, said 'ah, thanks' and put it on his shelf.
I am now working on a larger version that may, if it fulfills my aspirations, end up appearing in the dojo of a certain new york based shakuhachi sensei.
