Re: Buddha playing Shakuhachi

Did you make this sculpture, Seth? That's beautiful.

Re: Buddha playing Shakuhachi

I think you really captured the essence of shakuhachi in this work. I would love to see the sculpture in 3D.

I'm sure Tanaguchi will be honored. How tall is the sculpture and what material is it made of?

It is about 8 inches tall and it is made from bass wood, clay, and oil & acryllic paint.

Basically I am not a very skilled carver but I like working with wood.  So I generally carve in wood to the best of my ability, and then use a self-hardening clay to go back and fill in all of my carving mistakes. And when I am done I use oil paints to create an interesting texture.  And in this instance I put on a thin arcyllic paint wash in various blue tones to make the coloring dynamic or 'antique' looking.

When I gave it to Tanaguchi he pretty much shrugged, said 'ah, thanks' and put it on his shelf.

I am now working on a larger version that may, if it fulfills my aspirations, end up appearing in the dojo of a certain new york based shakuhachi sensei.
